Over half the world’s population lives in urban areas, the majority in mega cities, of which there are 30, each of them home to between four and ten million people. By the year 2015 the number of mega cities is expected to rise to 60, with a combined population of 600 million. Currently cities account for around two-thirds of global energy consumption, 60 percent of water consumption and 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

In German households alone, it is estimated that there are around 60 million old cell phones lying unused in cupboards and drawers. As well as plastics, these devices also contain a range of metals that are gradually becoming ever scarcer. At IFAT ENTSORGA, which takes place from May 7 to 11, 2012, in Munich, exhibitors and visitors will have the chance to deposit their old cell phones in a collection box at the East or West Entrance.
