Sustainability – our path to the future

Being part of our society, we, Messe München, are dedicated to our social and ecological responsibilities. Therefore, sustainability is an integral part of our corporate strategy.

We are committed ourselves to become CO2 neutral by 2030 - 20 years ahead of the goal set out in the Paris Climate Agreement and 10 years earlier than targeted by the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry (AUMA).

For this purpose, we have developed a sustainability strategy tailored to the exhibition industry. As part of our holistic sustainability program, we continuously initiate projects, which aim to reduce the CO2 emissions of Messe München.

We strive for sustainability for ourselves and our customers. We are actively promoting sustainability at our events.

Role model function

Our role as the world‘s leading trade fair entails accepting responsibility. That is why we want to express the principle of sustainability in our actions. We want to set a good example and make IFAT Munich more sustainable in an ongoing process, from the selection of materials, making a climate protection contribution for unavoidable CO₂ emissions and the handling of waste to the motivation of our exhibitors and visitors. Let’s join forces to make IFAT Munich even more sustainable.

Our future actions are founded on sustainability. It's not just a plan, it’s our attitude. And shall be the basis for our decisions and actions.

Acting sustainably. The measures taken by IFAT Munich.

As the World’s Leading Trade Fair for Water, Sewage, Waste and Raw Materials Management, we not only want to set an example, but point the way.

Our priorities:

Climate-friendly stand construction

  • In order to conserve resources, we have decided to not use aisle carpets anymore.

This saves around 484t of CO₂, which is equivalent to 1,000 economy flights from Munich to Mallorca.
  • We produce our stages, the Start-Up Area and other IFAT Munich areas from sustainable, resource-conserving materials, using the woodï stand system from our partner meplan. Smart, regional logistics consequently reduce ecological costs. Thanks to its modularity and clever circularity, woodï makes stand construction more sustainable than ever before.

Climate-optimized trade fair management

Our goal is to make IFAT increasingly sustainable. However, CO2 emissions can not be avoided while preparing and holding an event. Therefore we are supporting various climate protection projects in cooperation with our partner myclimate.

Eco-friendly infrastructure

  • From IFAT Munich 2024, public transport will once again be included in all exhibitor passes and visitor tickets. Through the direct connection to the public transport system, we are thus enabling and promoting an environmentally friendly way to get to IFAT Munich.
  • We promote travelling with electric vehicles by providing almost 110 charging stations on the exhibition grounds.
  • Sustainable waste management: we dispose of waste resulting from construction and dismantling as commercial waste for recycling—recyclable materials can thus be returned to the economic cycle.

Sustainable advertising materials

  • We reduce our print circulations and are constantly optimizing our digital advertising media. For example, we are no longer printing an exhibition catalogue for the fair, but only a visitor guide with a much smaller volume.
  • For our printed advertising materials, we only use FSC-certified recycled paper.
  • We print our materials in a climate-neutral way.
  • We deliberately cooperate with printing companies that commit to the principle of sustainability.
